In the Stars

itsagirlpoem:

Looks like your friends

could use that sensitive listening

ear of yours.

When your best pal

groans about her boring

look, is she really

                                    asking for help

designing a new

‘do?

warrenreview:

Almost 50 years ago, UVic students marched to protest a fee increase. They were expected to pay more for the same. Today, we are expected to pay more for less.

Where will we draw the line? When will we speak out? When we wake up to find our programs have been slashed (like at MRU and Capilano)? When rising tuition and student debt finally breaks us? When our sessionals face layoffs and faculty members feel at pains just to be heard (…um, already happening)? When, in short, our backs are against the wall?

Have no doubt, this year’s cuts will only be the beginning. It’s high time that we learn how to say no. Waiting for the ‘right time’, the time of ‘crisis’, will do us no good. We need to act, not react. We should not have to desperately defend our university; so let’s start concerning ourselves with how to build a better one now. We can do so together by taking the initiative to raise awareness, create alliances, and envision the future of our own university.

Perhaps we can start by taking a page from our own history.
